About This Blog

I believe we should know where our food comes from. I also believe that food is our key to health. The goals of this blog are to inspire people to eat whole, real food; provide suggestions for eating healthy on a budget; share recipes and information about the Specific Carbohydrate Diet; help connect people to local sources of healthy food; and increase awareness of the latest research on food and nutrition.

About the Name

This blog was named Nothing But Dirt for a couple of reasons. One is because real food comes from the dirt (not from a factory). The other is a nod to the teasing I sometimes get from my friend Trina for my eating plan (the Specific Carbohydrate Diet with some personal limitations because I just can’t digest certain “allowed” foods yet). More than once we’ve had a conversation something like this:

Trina: Can you eat quinoa?
Me: Nope.
Trina: Can you eat hummus?
Me: Nope.
Trina: Can you eat sweet potatoes?
Me: Nope.
Trina: Sheesh. What can you eat? Dirt?! Hey everyone, Jen can only eat dirt!

I know she’s kidding, and it has now become a joke among our friends that I can only eat dirt. So it seemed like the perfect name for my blog about real food.
